Application Process

We hold a volunteer new hire academy each year in March for those interested in volunteering, it is advertised on our Facebook page in advance. If you can’t find the information you need, feel free to email us to inquire about the start date for the next academy. All new hires enter a 180-day probationary period. During this six-month probation, you’ll be considered a Rookie Firefighter and will wear a red shirt. To become a full Firefighter with the department, you must successfully complete all steps in the process.

This rookie period is designed to ensure that only those who are truly committed remain. We are not a T-shirt department—if that’s what you’re looking for, you might want to look elsewhere. We are a team of highly dedicated and determined individuals who are here to make a real difference. Once you have completed the rookie period, you will be voted onto the department by the officers. If approved, you will then be allowed to purchase your uniform and begin your first year as a Firefighter

After completing your rookie period, you’ll be required to obtain a medical license and your Firefighter 1 certification within two years (preferably one each year). We will assist you in finding these classes and cover some of the costs.

You can check to see if we are hiring here. You are welcome to visit us in person at station 1 on any Tuesday evening between 5:30p and 8pm to get a station tour and see what we are all about. Process Explained

The process of becoming a firefighter at Oak Grove Fire Department involves several steps. Completing these requirements does not automatically guarantee a position on the department or the rank of firefighter. Throughout your rookie period, a consistent and determined effort is essential. Every day counts, and rookies are not guaranteed a spot on the team.

Step 1: Application Submission

Check https://www.publicsafetyanswers.com/oakgrove to see if we are currently accepting applications. Submit a completed application and resume. Accuracy and honesty are critical—do not omit or hide information.

Step 2: Online PSA Assessment Test

Comprised of critical thinking and reasoning
Video Questions
Your test score contributes to your overall evaluation.

Step 3: Physical Ability Test (PAT)

Pre-test vitals must be within acceptable ranges.
Complete the entire course to proceed.
You may retest once per hiring cycle, subject to available test dates.
Full Time career applicants must pass the OFPRS PAT found in Form 9

Step 4: In Person Panel Interview

Conducted by a minimum of three current firefighters.
Evaluates qualities like preparation, dedication, courage, and integrity.
Your score contributes to the overall decision but doesn’t directly disqualify you.

Step 5: Rookie Academy

A mandatory 5-7 day course, usually held on weeknights and Saturdays.
Includes hands-on, written, and observational learning.

Step 6: Rookie Packet

Complete within 180 days of receiving it during Rookie Period.
Seek firefighters or officers to sign you off on skills.
Submit the completed packet to an officer for review.

Step 7: Rookie Exam

Non-open book
Pass with a minimum score of 80%.
One retest is allowed if you fail.
Not Applicable to Full Time Employees

Step 8: Skills Testing

Tests include Rookie Packet, academy skills, and brush truck skills.
Must pass within 180 days.
One retest opportunity available, to be scheduled before the 180-day deadline.

Final Decision

For Volunteers after completing all eight steps and a six-month probationary period, the Fire Chief and Fire Officers will determine your acceptance. If not accepted, you may reapply after one calendar year. If accepted, you may order your department-issued blue shirt, but your training and learning will continue.
